I started out playing "pans" while I was still
at school as a result of the forceful
encouragement from some of my friends. It was
one instrument I wanted nothing to do with,
however, after a few months of learning the
basics there was a profound love affair between
the pans and I.
I moved from the 2nd pans to the tenor bass, and
then the basses. I realized that I would find
myself working out more melodies than bass while
learning a song and subsequently would spend
most of the time I had
‘messing’
with the 1st pan and double tenors.
Frustratingly, there were so many people wanting
to play those pans it was hard to move from the
basses. I remember having to wait until some of
the older students graduated before I could
spend more time on melody pans, and by then I
was in love with the deep, yet melodic sound of
the double tenors.
I went on to play with many steel bands in
Barbados and then on cruise liners. I joined
Caribbean Magic and I started playing keyboards
in the band, and that was it. I began sequencing
and making backing tracks, and before I had
noticed what was happening, I had a repertoire
of music that would cater to varying audiences
and or occasions.
In a nutshell, that's how I started playing the
steel drums.
I was also the founder and bass player for the
